HORN OF AFRICA: UMCOR RESPONDS TO FAMINE IN THE REGION

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is working with partners already in the region to respond to the escalating famine in the Horn of Africa. This complex emergency is the culmination of crop failure, one of the worst droughts in 50 years, escalating food prices, and political unrest in the region.

UMCOR is sending grants to support the work of ACT Alliance, Church World Service, and GlobalMedic in Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia. Funds will provide food, clean water, and shelter for those who are displaced and living in camps.

Your gifts to International Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #982450, designated to Horn of Africa Crisis, will support these and future efforts to alleviate suffering for so many. Online Giving

INDONESIA: UMCOR CLOSES OFFICE

Six years and thousands of beneficiaries later, UMCOR has completed its mission and closed its doors in Indonesia—not before ensuring that once traumatized communities had rediscovered their capacity to be agents of their own development.

“UMCOR did an incredible job of staying around after most other [international] organizations had left, after the emergency money was spent, after the reconstruction was finished,” said John Holveck, former head of mission of UMCOR Indonesia.

“We stayed and worked with the people to create a strategy that basically looked at how to transition from the emergency and reconstruction phases to longer-term, sustainable development through capacity building and community-driven development,” Holveck said.

JFON: PROGRAM ADOPTS NEW STRUCTURE

During their most recent meeting, last April, UMCOR’s board of directors adopted a resolution to separately incorporate the Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) ministry.

JFON will become a member corporation (currently referred to as National JFON) with UMCOR being the sole member, thus maintaining the connection and support that UMCOR has long provided the JFON program. UMCOR’s JFON staff will move into this new entity.

This new structure will provide greater accountability, uniform policies and practices, and greater potential for growth. A strong board of directors will provide leadership, strategic governance, advice, and direction to the staff and volunteers of the organization.

A board nominating committee, consisting of UMCOR executives and representatives from both the UMCOR board and the JFON network, has been in conversation about the make-up of National JFON’s founding board. The committee hopes to present a slate of nine potential board members to the UMCOR board at their October 2011 meeting for approval.

JAPAN: EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI RESPONSE

UMCOR is supporting The United Church of Christ in Japan (Kyodan) as they open disaster relief centers to coordinate long-term recovery and house volunteers. The centers are located in the Sendai and Ishinomaki areas of Japan, which were among the areas hardesthit by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

The official death toll for this disaster has surpassed 15,300 people, with more than 8,200 individuals still missing. Damages are estimated at $305 billion, making this the costliest disaster on record. More than 72,550 buildings were completely destroyed, washed away, or burned to the ground.
