AFGHANISTAN: A PLACE TO CALL HOME
Juma Gul and his family fled to Pakistan from Afghanistan, hoping to escape decades of violence and war. Just over three years ago, the family decided to return to Afghanistan. When they did, they found their home had been destroyed, as had local water sources for agriculture and livestock.
Gul and his family became among the 44,000 Afghans to participate in a program of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to rehabilitate damaged streams and restore damaged homes.
The program also provided for the construction of a clinic, the training of community health workers, and the distribution of livestock or fruit tree seedlings.
At the project’s completion late last year, Gul commented, “I am happy to be an Afghan living in my own country, in my own house, and cultivating my own land.” Read the full story here.

SIERRA LEONE: MORINGA TREE, “MOTHER’S BEST FRIEND”
“Mother’s Best Friend” is just one of the names the Moringa tree goes by. The tree, native to the foothills of the Himalayas, but now widely cultivated in Africa, Central and South America, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, and the Philippines, is also known as the “miracle tree.”
UMCOR’s Sustainable Agriculture and Development program has played a pioneering role in Africa in the promotion of the Moringa as a source of nutrition, health, even purified water. Last October, UMCOR launched a promotion of the tree in Sierra Leone to support vulnerable communities there.

ARMENIA: ANTI-TRAFFICKING PROGRAM FAQS
UMCOR’s victim assistance program in Armenia is the only program in the country that provides long-term, comprehensive reintegration services to women, children, and men survivors of human trafficking. About 90 percent of survivors who pass through the program return to lead fruitful lives.

CHILE: BRINGING COMFORT TO REFUGEES
Chile has become a sanctuary for a great many asylum-seekers and refugees. To help these newcomers adapt to life in their new country, the Methodist Church of Chile and the ecumenical Social Support Foundation of the Christian Churches created a Program of Refugee Integration Services (PROSIR).
With support from UMCOR, PROSIR is currently assisting 150 refugees in the Chilean capital, Santiago, and in the city of Arica. The organization offers guidance and direct services in the areas of finance, legal services, and psychosocial support.
