INDONESIA: VOLCANO AND TSUNAMI RESPONSE

UMCOR is supporting its partner, GlobalMedic, as the organization provides emergency water for those affected by a volcanic eruptio in Yogakarta, Indonesia and the subsequent earthquake and tsunami in West Sumatra, Oct. 26, 2010. These disasters killed at least 100 people and 502 more are missing.

Residents living in the devastated areas need food, water, medical care and shelter. GlobalMedic is working to provide cleaning drinking water in both affected areas. Purification filters will provide clean and safe water to survivors.

Give to support this and other works of compassion following major disasters by giving to Indonesia Emergency, UMCOR Advance #217400. Online Giving

WORLD AIDS DAY: A CHANGE OF HEART IN THE FACE OF AIDS

In the Philadelphia area, a group of United Methodist churches are working to reduce stigma and increase knowledge about HIV/AIDS. The ministry, called Helping Us Be (H.U.B) of Hope, is a mobile ministry of the Church of the Open Door in Kennett Square, Penn.

H.U.B of Hope’s mission is to inform, equip, and mobilize diverse faith communities to respond with compassion and justice as servants in relationship with those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. The ministry gives special attention to African American and Latino faith communities who have been disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. They provide Bible study resources as well as practical help for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Read more about how this creative ministry of compassion is making a difference in the Philadelphia area.

H.U.B. of Hope is supported by the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund. Give your support to this and other HIV/AIDS ministries by observing World AIDS Day on Dec. 1 and by donating to UM Global AIDS Fund, UMCOR Advance #982345. Online Giving

US: DISASTER RESPONSE ACADEMY

UMCOR’s annual Disaster Response Academy is currently being held at UMCOR Sager Brown. Approximately 50 people from across the US are meeting at the facility in Baldwin, La., to increase their ability to respond to a disaster in their respective annual conferences.

The 2010 Academy is focusing on the roles and responsibilities of annual conference disaster response coordinators and personnel in real-life disaster situations. They will work through various scenarios including what to do in the case of an earthquake, hurricane, wildfire and grain elevator explosion.

By the end of the five-day conference, attendees will be able to validate their level of readiness in the case of disaster and identify their annual conference’s strengths and the challenges that they might face.

You can support UMCOR’s US Disaster Response program, which helps annual conferences prepare for and respond to disasters of all kids. Give to US Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #901670. Online Giving

RESOURCES: HUNGER AND POVERTY FACTS

Get the facts about hunger and poverty. This new flyer insert provides examples of how UMCOR programs are addressing issues of hunger and poverty around the world.

Facts like: 5,000 children die each day due to preventable water and sanitation-related diseases. UMCOR programs are working to combat this tragic reality for many children, by providing education about basic steps people can make to live healthy lives, protect their water sources, and build wells and latrines where no water and sanitation facilities are available.

Gifts can be made in any amount to any missionary or project, and 100% of the gift will be directed to the designation of your choice. You can even download a gift card to share with your loved one. When you give, you and your loved one will know that a person in need will also be able to share in the spirit of the season.
