Noel Espinoza* was in his late teens when he left Mexico City to seek a better life in the US, entering without permission. It seemed like a dream come true when he fell in love and married Cindy*, an American citizen. Sadly, Cindy soon began to physically and verbally abuse Noel, threatening him with deportation.

Out of fear and shame, Noel suffered in silence until 2009, when he finally left his abusive marriage. Employees at the YMCA where he sought shelter referred him to JFON W. Michigan for help in resolving his immigration issues.

JFON filed paperwork on Noel’s behalf. He was approved, and in September JFON attended his green card interview in Detroit. The interview went well and Noel walked out of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service office as a Lawful Permanent Resident!

Katie Almas decided to collect and assemble 100 birthing kits for her Girl Scout Gold Award Final project. She used the project to not only help the women who would eventually receive these kits, that include essential items to promote a safe, clean delivery, but also used it as an opportunity to educate those helping her about women’s health issues.

Katie sent the 100 kits to UMCOR Sager Brown in early September and by the end of the month she received notice that her hard work paid off. Her award project was accepted by the Girl Scouts of Northern California. Congratulations Katie!

UMCOR is working through partners such as Church World Service (CWS) and Muslim Aid to bring help and relief to the cataclysmic floods in Pakistan that began three months ago. Donor response has been slow, yet the needs are great. By working with partner organizations, UMCOR is able to accomplish more to help suffering people in Pakistan.

Both organizations have been operating in Pakistan for many years and were on the ground as the floods rolled across the country in a slow moving tsunami. UMCOR is financially supporting the work of CWS and Muslim Aid as they provide medical, food, shelter and livelihoods assistance. CWS and Muslim Aid work with different communities and by supporting both UMCOR is reaching a wider group of people in need.

UMCOR has long been known in the US as the go-to organization for disaster response training. In addition to providing a variety of disaster response and preparedness courses to United Methodist annual conferences, UMCOR is also called on from time to time to train groups outside of the United Methodist connection.

Training sessions have already taken place in the Philippines, Cambodia and Chile. In both the Philippines and Chile the training was put to the test almost immediately by serious disasters. The conferences were able to use what they learned from UMCOR to begin a quick and effective response. [more]
