HAITI: STRENGTHENING HEALTH SYSTEMS
UMCOR is partnering with Global Health Action to help Haiti rebuild a stronger, more effective and community-based health system. Global Health Action has been working in Haiti for more than 30 years, implementing and strengthening community-based health programs.
Global Health Action reports that in the wake of the devastating January 2010 earthquake the need for an improved community-based health system is greater than ever. UMCOR has committed more than $50,000 to help Global Health Action in this effort.

US: ANNOUNCING A CHANGE TO CLEANING BUCKET CONTENTS
Cleaning buckets are one of the first signs of hope a family receives after a hurricane, flood, tornado or fire. UMCOR collaborates with Church World Service in the popular kit ministry of The United Methodist Church. Recently, CWS removed bleach from their list of contents for the cleaning buckets and UMCOR is following their lead.
“Bleach in the cleaning buckets has been an item of concern for a while now,” says Kathy Kraiza, Executive Director of UMCOR Relief Supplies. She goes on to say that although it is a basic household cleaner, transporting the buckets containing bleach has been an issue in some regions of the US.
Bleach is often used as a mold inhibitor when cleaning after a flood or hurricane. The one bottle provided in the older version of the cleaning bucket was often only a starting point for homeowners. For future disaster response, Kraiza says, “we’ll address the need for bleach on a case-by-case basis.”
Instructions on packing and shipping these much-needed kits are available online.
SOUTH SUDAN: FOOD FOR THE HUNGRY
A survey conducted by UMCOR in August revealed that the food shortage in South Sudan is so severe that more than half of the residents in two counties say they regularly skip meals.
As a result, UMCOR is working to address some of the root causes of the food insecurity. One of the biggest components of the project will be agricultural inputs and training, which will allow residents to establish techniques that are sustainable year after year. They will specifically focus on improving the production of cassava crops and establishing fish farms—two staples in the South Sudanese diet.
In their October board meeting, UMCOR directors approved $262,740 toward the overall $1,474,953 three year project, which will focus on food security in the communities of Mugwo Payam in Yei County and Kenyi Payam in Lainya County. [more]

CHILE: EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI RECOVERY CONTINUES
More than eight months have passed since an earthquake and resulting tsunami killed over 500 people and wiped out hundreds of thousands of homes in Chile.
In the midst of the destruction—and reconstruction—is the Methodist Church of Chile (IMECH). IMECH and its disaster response organization, Methodist Humanitarian Aid Team (EMAH) continue to provide support for survivors. “We are reconstructing hope, lives and the capacity for the community to walk with one another,” says Bishop Mario Martinez, during a recent visit to United Methodist Committee on Relief's (UMCOR) offices in New York.
The church is reconstructing homes, providing psychosocial support, microenterprise support and food assistance. Funding for much of this work comes through UMCOR and the ACT Alliance. The ACT Alliance is a global network of more than 100 church-based humanitarian organizations. [more]
UMCOR is also providing financial and additional training support for IMECH and EMAH’s response to the earthquake and tsunami. While more than $649,440 has been raised to date, more is needed to provide the support Chile needs to recover. Your gift to Chile Emergency, UMCOR Advance #3021178, will go a long way to support recovery efforts.
