Although nearly two months have passed since severe flooding began in Pakistan, the emergency has not abated and the need for solidarity and aid continues to be urgent.

An estimated four million people remain homeless, hundreds are missing, and thousands are still stranded and waiting to be evacuated to higher, dry land. Some eight million people are in need of immediate food aid and, according to the World Bank, Pakistan has lost about $1 billion in cash crops.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is responding through its partners in Pakistan, including Church World Service and Muslim Aid. Your gift to International Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #982450, can help. Please earmark your check for Pakistan Emergency. Online Giving

UMCOR partners The Methodist Church of Chile (IMECH) and the Methodist Humanitarian Aid Team (EMAH), members of the Interchurch Emergency Committee of Chile, are part of a holistic recovery effort in that South American country following the massive earthquake there last February.

UMCOR disaster response executives Melissa Crutchfield and Rev. Tom Hazelwood offered a follow-up training in disaster preparedness last month, and then toured earthquake- and tsunami-affected areas that now are receiving home construction, food, livelihood, and psycho-social support.

A disaster response training in October 2009 positioned IMECH and EMAH to positively impact the response to the 8.8-magnitude earthquake and recovery efforts. Your gift to Chile Emergency, UMCOR Advance #3021178, helps the Chilean people rebuild their lives. Online Giving

Before Narek Elderly Center in Armenia received assistance from UMCOR food programs, it was unable to supply its residents with a regular source of protein. Cheese was served once a week, if at all. Now, thanks to the programs, the center offers residents 40 grams of cheese a day, plus other nutritious food.

UMCOR Armenia is helping the center procure its own food source and become self-sustaining. Narek Elderly Center now has a small-scale farm, which UMCOR provided with beehives, dairy cows, and related training in agriculture, animal husbandry, and diversified food preparation. Read more.

This Saturday, October 16, is World Food Day 2010. Mark the day with your gift to Armenia Emergency, UMCOR Advance #250225, and support projects like those at Narek Elderly Center. Online Giving

Farmers in Minnesota were expecting a bumper crop this fall, but before they could bring in the harvest, heavy rains in the southeastern part of the state provoked flooding that left “soybeans falling from their pods or corn stalks rotting in standing water,” reported Minnesota Annual Conference Bishop Sally Dyck.

The rain fell on September 23, and three days later, the Conference Disaster Response Team was helping residents in Pine Island and other small towns of the area to clean out flooded basements and remove their ruined belongings.

UMCOR support for the conference’s relief efforts will keep recovery moving forward. Your gift to US Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #901670, makes a difference. Online Giving
