GLOBAL: LOOK FOR 10-FOLD LAUNCH THIS SUNDAY

Imagine a movement that mobilizes tens of thousands of people in 10 days to multiply God’s work. The movement is 10-Fold, and it launches this Sunday. A participant’s guide tells you how it works—and how you can be a part of it.

10-Fold is an online educational campaign that highlights some ministries of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Join us October 10 – 19 at www.10-fold.org when we bring UMCOR and other Advance projects to you through webcasts, streaming video, online chats, and other media.

CHILE: REBUILDING AFTER MASSIVE EARTHQUAKE

It has been just over half a year since a massive, 8.8-magnitude earthquake in Chile killed more than 400 people and caused over $30 billion in material losses. More than 370,000 houses were seriously damaged, and 1,226 schools and 130 hospitals are in need of repair.

UMCOR partner the Methodist Humanitarian Aid Team (EMAH) of the Methodist Church of Chile is part of an ecumenical coalition in Chile that is addressing both immediate and long-term needs related to health (including psycho-social care), food, livelihoods, and the repair and construction of homes.

 JFON: CLIENT SUCCESS STORY

Andrés and Teresa Vasquez (not their actual names) and their two children came to the United States as refugees from Cuba in 2000. As they struggled to adjust to life in a new country, Andrés and Teresa worked long hours to support their family. This soon took its toll, and parents and children drifted apart.

When the couple’s 15-year-old daughter fell in love with a classmate, she moved with his family to El Salvador. The authorities there discovered she was in the country without authorization, and they deported her. But her return to the US was fraught with irregularities, and her family sought help from UMCOR’s Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) program.

Thanks to JFON, the Vazquez family is reunited and their daughter was granted citizenship last summer. Read the full story here. Your gift to Justice for Our Neighbors, UMCOR Advance #901285, supports UMCOR’s ministry among immigrant communities across the US. Click the button to give now online

RELIEF SUPPLIES: THOUSANDS OF KITS SENT

In the first six months of 2010, UMCOR’s Relief Supply Ministry sent more than 200,000 kits to people in need in the US and overseas. The equivalent dollar value of the kits comes to nearly $3 million.

Health kits, school kits, cleaning buckets, blankets, layette kits, and bedding packs were sent to destinations in the US, including Nashville, TN; Brownsville, TX; and Calexico, CA; as well as overseas to Haiti and the Republic of Georgia.

Relief supplies make a tangible difference in the lives of people in times of crisis and in meeting everyday necessities. Learn here how you can donate kit supplies. And give to Material Resource Ministry, UMCOR Advance #901440, to help purchase supplies. Online Giving
