PAKISTAN: MILLIONS IN URGENT NEED
Bashir Ahmed, 30, a day laborer from Sultan Kot Village, Pakistan, was poor before the floods started tearing through his country four weeks ago, but now his family has nothing. He is grateful he was able to bring his elderly parents, two younger brothers, wife and four children to safety.
Bashir and his family received emergency food assistance through Church World Service and the National Capacity Building Program, in partnership with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). The relief package met some of their immediate needs, but their crisis continues.
At least 8 million Pakistanis are in dire need of emergency assistance—food, clean water, and shelter; more than 20 million have been affected. The United Nations says the disaster’s toll is comparable to the combined toll of the 2010 Haiti earthquake, 2004 Indonesia tsunami, and 2005 Kashmir earthquake.
Your help is urgently needed. Please give generously to International Disaster Response, Pakistan Flash Floods, UMCOR Advance #982450. Please remember to indicate Pakistan Floods on the memo line of your check.
US: UMCOR RESPONDS TO IOWA FLOOD
After three nights of heavy rainfall in central and eastern Iowa this month, flooding forced hundreds of residents to flee their homes. The effects of the storms were compounded by those of the snowy winter and wet spring and summer that preceded them.
UMCOR provided emergency assistance to the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church to meet the needs of communities affected by the flooding.
Please give to US Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #901670, to support those affected by disasters in the United States.
HAITI: UMCOR SEEKS A NEW HEAD OF MISSION
UMCOR is seeking a qualified and experienced professional to fill the position of Head of Mission in its Haiti field office. The position is a senior one and key to helping advance the organization’s relief and long-term recovery work in Haiti, following the January 12 earthquake.
Please feel free to share this information so that UMCOR can fill this important position with a highly qualified, experienced, and committed individual. For more information, please visit UMCOR’s Job and Volunteer Opportunities website.
LIBERIA/SIERRA LEONE: STRENGTHENING RURAL COMMUNITIES
Years after armed conflict interrupted the lives of the peoples of Sierra Leone and Liberia, rural communities still struggle to rebuild and develop farms and markets so that they might feed their families and help confront the general food crises in their countries.
The West Africa Initiative is an UMCOR program that is implemented by Agricultural Mission, Inc. In partnership with the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) and the United Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, rural communities build capacity to develop self-reliant food production and marketing organizations.
Confront hunger and encourage development in West Africa and elsewhere with your gift to Hunger and Development, Advance #982029.
GLOBAL: WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY
The United Nations designated last Thursday, August 19, as World Humanitarian Day, a day set aside to remember and celebrate the lives of those who have died in the service of humankind and those who follow in that legacy of love and service.
In 2010, UMCOR head the Rev. Sam Dixon and UMVIM leader the Rev. Clinton Raab in Haiti, and General Board of Global Ministries missionary Daniel Terry and nine companions in Afghanistan were among those who gave their lives in the service of a more just, more humane world.
In the words of UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon , “On World Humanitarian Day, let us remember those in need…/Those who have fallen while trying to help them…/And those who continue to give aid, undeterred by the dangers they face — for the sake of building a safer, better world.”
Your gift to UMCOR Undesignated, Advance #999895, allows UMCOR to be there and to be hope among the many peoples we serve.
