*TURKEY: UMCOR Eases Earthquake Burden

*UMCOR: Courage, Strength, and Hope

*EVENT: Lighten the Burden III

*JFON: Immigration Resources

*CAMBODIA: Disaster Response Training

After a 6.0-magnitude earthquake rocked rural Turkey last March, 57 people died, 987 buildings were damaged or destroyed, and thousands of head of livestock, the basis of the local economy in Elazig County, the epicenter of the quake, were lost.

Thanks to a grant from the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the International Blue Crescent Relief and Development Foundation (IBC) distributed emergency relief, in the form of food, health kits, and heaters, to 500 earthquake survivors.

“Once again we appreciated your kind contribution and express our gratitude on behalf of the Turkish people,” wrote IBC Vice President Muzaffer Baca. IBC has been an UMCOR partner in relief efforts in Pakistan, Indonesia, and the Middle East as well as in Turkey.

In a new blog that will appear regularly on UMCOR’s website, UMCOR head Cynthia Fierro Harvey reflects on the courage, strength, and hope that are both a part of UMCOR’s work around the world and characteristic of the people the organization serves.

“It is up to us to nurture the seeds of hope that they may grow wildly,” Harvey says, paraphrasing the writer Macrina Whitaker, in the blog’s first entry. “That kind of seed-tending requires a kind of courage and strength that can only come from the heart.”

More than 30 representatives of the Methodist Mission of Cambodia (MMC) participated in a recent workshop on disaster preparedness and response, organized by UMCOR. Melissa Crutchfied, UMCOR executive for International Disaster Response, facilitated the three-day event.

Heavy rain, typhoons, and flooding are regular occurrences in Cambodia. The workshop helped local church communities acquire tools and resources they need to better prepare for, and respond to, such emergencies.

The workshop agenda, which was developed with input from participants, included an overview of levels and types of disasters, introduction to international standards and protocols, needs assessment methods, and mapping of risks and resources in affected communities.
