GEORGIA: NUTRITION SUPPORT FOR NEW MOTHERS

Through two programs run jointly with the US Department of State, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is helping new mothers in Georgia cope with one of the hidden consequences of war and violence: the stress-induced inability to lactate and so, to breastfeed their babies.

The programs, which are run in 27 locations in the Eastern European country, help 4,200 new mothers who have been clinically diagnosed unable to lactate. They provide medical consultations, breast milk substitutes, and psychosocial support to help them process the trauma.

CHILE: TIMES OF RE-CONSECRATION

Once Pastor Lemuel Acuña got to his feet after the February 27 earthquake in Chile, he left his parsonage and, taking a lantern with him at that pre-dawn hour, went to check on his neighbors. He left the doors of the church open.

Those doors of the Methodist Church of Talca have remained open ever since: inviting the community to worship, offering workshops to deal with trauma—especially in children— and consoling the unemployed and those steeped in loss. “These are times of re-consecration,” says Acuña.

Accompany the Chilean people as they rebuild their lives. Your generosity will support the restoration of communities in Chile, including the reconstruction of homes and places of worship. Please give generously to Chile Emergency, UMCOR Advance #3021178. Online Giving

MOZAMBIQUE: GROWING CONCERN FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH

When 17-year old Enora (not her real name) came to Chicuque Rural Hospital nearly ready to deliver, Isilda Gertrudes, doctor of nursing, knew she could help the girl through her high-risk pregnancy. But when Enora’s family realized surgery would be required, they whisked the girl away.

Enora returned seven days later, having attempted to deliver at home. She was suffering eclampsia, malaria, a fistula, and ultimately, she lost the baby. “This is one of the saddest scenarios,” writes Gertrudes, “and it heightens the need for more community education to improve women’s health.”

You can help Chicuque Rural Hospital, which offers assistance to six district hospitals in the province of Inhambane, provide that much needed service. Please give to Hospital Revitalization, UMCOR Advance #982168. Online Giving
