In Today's Hotline:

*PHILIPPINES: Volunteers Distribute Relief

*UMCOR: 2009 Gift Catalog is Here!

*CAMBODIA: Typhoon Ketsana Response

*US: UMCOR Disaster Exec Awarded for Social Awareness

UMCOR Philippines volunteers are hard at work purchasing, assembling and packing relief supplies for distribution to about 500 families in the Pililia and Angono, Rizal regions of the Philippines. An additional 1,500 families are scheduled to receive supplies in Talim Island, Binan Laguna, Santa Cruz, Laguna, and Tanay areas.

Volunteer students and faculty members from Union Theological Seminary in Manila, and Philippine Christine University offered their time after class to help UMCOR Philippines assemble supplies. The relief efforts are expected to be long term and students have already committed their time to help out this summer.

The Philippines endured a fourth storm on Oct 31 when Typhoon Santi struck Central Luzon. Volunteers were left without power or water.

UMCOR is assisting the Methodist Mission of Cambodia to provide 10 tons of rice for 15,000 people in eight provinces of Northern Cambodia, who were affected by Typhoon Ketsana, which struck the country in late Sept. About one million people have lost access to food and are in need of relief assistance.

Working through the Methodist Church in Cambodia, Community Health Agriculture Development, and local and non government organizations, UMCOR is helping distribute food to the most vulnerable in Kampong Thom, Banteay Meanchey, Takeo, Svay Rieng, Kampong Cham, Kratie, and Siem Reap provinces, as well as parts of Phnom Penh, which is mostly under water.

Food is desperately needed as thousands of families lost rice, vegetables and other cash crops due to damaging floodwaters. Please give now to International Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #982450. Click the button to give now online

Tom Hazelwood, UMCOR’s US disaster executive, was among three honorees to receive recognition of contributions in the areas of religious education and social awareness from Hendrix College in Conway, Ark., during the 25th annual Steel-Hendrix Awards banquet last month.

Tom Hazelwood, a native of Arkansas, received the Ethel K. Millar award for Religion and Social Awareness, in honor of three Hendrix College alumni who distinguished themselves in these fields. Hazelwood, an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church, serves as the Assistant General Secretary for disaster response in the US for UMCOR.

In 1984, Hendrix College inaugurated the annual Steel-Hendrix Lectureship to celebrate one hundred years of official relationship with the United Methodist Church. It was named in honor of Marshall T. Steel, a prominent minister and former president of the college.
