In the earthquake-struck provincial capital of Padang and Pariaman District in Indonesia, UMCOR is working through partners including Church World Service, conducting assessments of affected areas and bringing relief to the country’s most vulnerable populations.

Food and non-food items like baby kits, mosquito nets, hygiene kits and blankets are being distributed to 50,000 families in need. 5,000 people will have access to emergency shelter and water, hygiene and sanitation facilities. Psychosocial counseling is available for those traumatized by the earthquake.

UMCOR, through GlobalMedic, a Canada-based emergency relief organization, is providing 100,000 people with clean drinking water for two months through the distribution of 1.5 million water purification tablets (each tablet purifies 1 liter of water) to affected families. Priority assistance will go to women and children living in shelters, medical facilities and hospitals.

UMCOR is developing future recovery plans that include food relief, livelihood assistance, reconstruction of homes, and well construction that will benefit nearly 388,000 survivors.

UMCOR is supporting CASA’s dry food ration distribution to 7,500 affected families, cooked meals for 12,000 individuals, as well as clothing, blankets, and other non-food items to communities in need. CASA is also providing temporary shelter to 3,000 affected families.

For people living with HIV/AIDS in developing countries, the presence of a home-based care worker is often essential to meeting daily needs. Home-based care workers often travel long distances by foot to reach their clients, sacrificing quality time with their own families.

UMCOR provided a grant to St. Paul’s Anglican Children Project to purchase bicycles for its home-based care workers in Chipata, Zambia.

“My marriage will now be strong again,” said one care giver. Before receiving the UMCOR bicycle, she spent almost an entire day traveling, only to return home late to do her own house chores. Now, her client visits have doubled, as she is able to care for more patients in less time.
