PAKISTAN: HELPING THE DISPLACED

The recent political crisis in the Swat region of Pakistan is forcing over 1 million people to flee for safety from heavy fighting in the North-West Frontier Province. UMCOR is providing immediate relief through partner organizations and is in contact with the Church of Pakistan regarding assistance.

UMCOR is supporting Church World Service (CWS) and Muslim Aid to deliver food, shelter, blankets and other supplies in the Mardan and Swabi district. CWS is setting up mobile health clinics to provide medical services to those in need and Muslim Aid is providing tents, mattresses and other needs including medical services.

Help support this effort with your gifts to International Disaster Response—Pakistan, UMCOR Advance #982450. Online Giving

HONDURAS: BUILDING HOMES

In Honduras, hundreds of thousands of families live in overcrowded, substandard rural homes that are vulnerable to flooding, mudslides and fire. Most are poorly built with weak foundations that cannot withstand heavy rainfall.

UMCOR is supporting a two-year grant for the Sierra Service Project of Carmichael, Calif., an incorporated agency of the California-Nevada and the California-Pacific Annual Conferences, to build 12 safe and secure homes for families in need. UMCOR is providing building materials and funds to hire local labor to supervise the work.

The Sierra Service Project involves North American youth and adult volunteers to assist in building homes in Honduras. For more information about volunteering with the Sierra Service Project team in the summer of 2010, contact Rick Eaton, executive director at rickeaton@sierraserviceproject.org or visit their website.

SOUTH AFRICA: SUPPORTING HUNGER PROJECTS

In developing countries, hunger, poverty, lack of education and malnutrition contribute to the problems of those living with HIV/AIDS or other health-related problems. SHADE (Sojourners, Help, Advocacy, Development, Education), a ministry of the Woodstock Methodist Church of South Africa, is addressing these concerns through its nutrition program, feeding centers, life skills training and self-sustaining agricultural projects.

UMCOR is supporting the operational and training program costs of SHADE’s hunger projects for one year. The assistance enables SHADE personnel and volunteers to improve their agricultural skills, income generating programs, and food gardens. The grant will also support SHADE’s Sister to Sister project which offers life skills training, care giving and leadership training for women.

SHADE has 28 projects in 20 different African countries and provides hunger relief to hundreds of vulnerable women, children and orphans. Support SHADE by giving to UMCOR Advance #180001. Online Giving

RESOURCES: WORLD REFUGEE DAY, JUNE 20

When war broke out in Iraq, Hanaa fled with her six children and new grandchild to Jordan. Hanaa was among the millions of uprooted Iraqi people who journeyed to Jordan, Syria and Turkey looking for safety.

When Gig Harbor United Methodist Church near Seattle, WA learned of the mass exodus, they felt called to sponsor an Iraqi family. They formed a committee and contacted Interchurch Refugee Ministries, a Church World Service affiliate in Seattle and UMCOR for assistance.

Gig Harbor UMC made the necessary arrangements to welcome Hanaa and her family when they learned of her arrival date. Today, the family is settling into their new home and new life.

World Refugee Day is June 20. Learn more by downloading UMCOR’s new church bulletin or by presenting UMCOR’s World Refugee Day Power Point Slide to your congregation to collect a special offering. You can also give to New Hope for Newcomers, UMCOR Advance # 901779. Online Giving
