UMCOR can now begin relief work in Cuba in response to Hurricanes Ike and Gustav. This week the US Government granted UMCOR’s parent agency, the General Board of Global Ministries, the appropriate licenses to provide the kind of humanitarian assistance that is so desperately needed in Cuba.

The two licenses will allow UMCOR to implement up to $1.1 million in humanitarian response from the present day through October 2009. While the license is restricted to specific activities as outlined in the license application, this opportunity represents a lifeline to thousands left in need by the storms. Please give to the new Cuba Emergency Advance to support this effort, UMCOR Advance #3020821. Click the button to give now online

UMCOR is supporting the Central Methodist Mission’s Ray of Hope program in Johannesburg, South Africa, by helping build a school for displaced and unaccompanied refugee children. The Mission serves as a place of refuge to many asylum seekers and refugees from Zimbabwe.

The new school will ensure a safe, structured and proactive learning environment for students and will be open to refugee children from Zimbabwe who otherwise do not have access to education. UMCOR will also provide medical care, counseling, job placement, educational and recreational programs.

Help Central Methodist Mission provide the love and care to people in need by giving to South Africa, Undesignated, UMCOR Advance # 00393A. Please indicate Central Methodist Mission in your giving. Online Giving

Those casting votes at St. Paul and St. Andrew United Methodist Church in New York City will receive special treatment on Election Day. The church, a designated polling place, will have members on hand to serve voters freshly-brewed fair trade coffee and dark chocolate minis from UMCOR’s partner Equal Exchange, along with homemade cookies and other treats.

The idea to serve fair trade products on Election Day came from the Rev. James F. Karpen, pastor of St. Paul and St. Andrew UMC. Christie House, Global Ministries’ editor of New World Outlook Magazine, helped facilitate the UMCOR Coffee Project at the church, which began in 2003.

Your fair trade purchases support UMCOR’s 100-Ton Challenge, a year-long campaign that encourages the buying of fair trade product to help farmers earn fair wages. Visit Equal Exchange now and cast your vote for fair trade through your purchases. You can also give to World Hunger/Poverty, UMCOR Advance #982920. Online Giving

Ratna is an HIV/AIDS-positive survivor from India. Both her husband and young child died of AIDS. When Ratna herself was near death, her in-laws pushed her out of their home. But, thanks to the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund-supported Comprehensive Rural Health Project in Jamkhed, India, Ratna received the treatment and care that helped restore her life. Today, Ratna is a leader as she has been selected as the program’s farm manager.
