The UMCOR Hotline
November 27, 2007
In Today's Hotline:
UMCOR is supporting the Kansas West Annual Conference with recovery efforts from multiple disasters that affected 25 counties in the Midwest earlier this year. A category F-5 tornado, flooding and heavy rains damaged several homes and caused extensive destruction.
UMCOR will assist Kansas West in long-term recovery plans that include the organization of three recovery committees, volunteer site management and case management work to address, serve and restore the widespread disaster areas.
Most affected by the tornado were the Greensburg, Trousdale and the Bennington regions. Please help us support the Kansas West Annual Conference in its long-term recovery efforts. Give to Midwest Tornado Emergencies, UMCOR Advance #901680.
World AIDS Day is December 1. Observe this important day in your community and create awareness by sharing the many resources that UMCOR has to offer. Visit our World AIDS Day page now and share the inspiring stories of how United Methodist gifts are making a difference to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Consider sending an E-card to encourage a friend to give toward the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund. The resources are at your reach—take the lead. Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise. Give to the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund, UMCOR Advance #982345.
Mavis Cele works for herself in a rented room opposite the main post office in Pinetown, South Africa. She works under the name “Marvellous Mavis” and is busy taking alteration orders for garments—thanks to The Sizanani Sewing Project supported by UMCOR.
The project helps to build personal dignity and self-esteem by giving students marketable skills for employment. Students learn how to make articles of clothing that are high in demand such as school uniform wear. Personal finance and business concept training foster entrepreneurship skills—enabling many to start businesses for themselves or work directly from home.
The Sizanani Sewing Project, a ministry of Pinetown Methodist Church in Durban, South Africa, has trained more than 1000 people. Students like Mavis are fast becoming financially independent and are providing more for their families. Help by giving to UMCOR Advance #180757, Sizanani.
Children in South Sudan can attend school. Children in Armenia are eating healthier. Tsunami-affected families now have strong and safe shelter. These are some of the programs highlighted in UMCOR’s “Hand of Hope” Calendar. These stories of hope warm the heart and express the fruit generated around the globe through the generous gifts of United Methodists and others.
Order your calendar now—supplies are limited. Get one for yourself to fill out your Christmas shopping list. Give a gift of hope that will inspire a loved one all year long.
UMCOR produces this annual calendar and charges a moderate fee of $8.50 plus shipping. We do not use your generous donations for its production. UMCOR uses other funding channels created specifically for projects such as these.
UMCOR provides emergency relief in many areas of the world. To find out more about UMCOR's ministries, please visit umcor.org. You can donate to any project by placing a contribution in the offering plate at a local United Methodist church; by sending a check to UMCOR, PO Box 9068, New York, NY 10087-9068; or by calling 1-800-554-8583, where credit card donations are accepted. You can also give online by clicking on any of the "Give Now" links. UMCOR is exempt from tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of the United States and qualifies for the maximum charitable contribution deduction by donors.
And, please pray for those who are hungry, displaced, sick or in poverty because of these and other natural and human-made disasters, and for the workers who minister to them.
