UMCOR is responding through Action By Churches Together partners and Muslim Aid, a British-based relief agency, to help thousands of displaced people affected by the deadly cyclone that struck South Bangladesh on Nov. 16. UMCOR will help with immediate basic needs and assist in long-term recovery plans.

In a release issued on Nov. 19, Sam Dixon, UMCOR’s top executive stated, “Although we are not there in person, we will work through our trusted partners who are already on the ground in Bangladesh.”

Both organizations are assessing the situation and UMCOR is standing ready to support their recovery efforts. An estimated three million people were either evacuated or were displaced by the storm. Please help the people of Bangladesh in their time of need by giving to Bangladesh Emergency, UMCOR Advance #202400.Online Giving

UMCOR is continuing to support The Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House in Illinois in helping Katrina evacuees get basic services. They will receive help with rent, utilities, bus passes, food vouchers, and gas cards for the next few months—as survivors go through the referral transition process to community agencies.

A large number of families affected by Katrina in 2005 are still in need of basic assistance. With UMCOR’s help, The Neighborhood House will also supply much-needed case management work and direct services for families and individuals who are living in rural areas and who do not qualify for Illinois Katrina Assistance Relief Efforts.

The Neighborhood House helps Katrina evacuees and their families with affordable housing, enrolling children in schools, and helping with job placement and training. As we ready ourselves to enjoy a bountiful Thanksgiving feast with our loved ones, let us remember to help those who do not have much to eat this season. A warm bowl of food can mean the difference between life and death for a child.

A child reportedly dies every five seconds due to hunger. Hunger affects 800 million people around the world, according to UN World Food Programme. It kills more people than HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.

Your gifts can make a difference. Learn how your gifts can help feed a family of five in Kenya with maize and beans for three months, or, serve a child a nutritious lunch in South Sudan for the next six months through the UMCOR Gift Catalog.
