UMCOR is responding with an emergency grant to the California-Pacific Annual Conference to aid those affected by the current unsettling wildfires in Southern California. Hundreds of homes have been consumed and thousands have been forced to evacuate.
In a news release issued today, UMCOR is in close contact with Bishop Mary Ann Swenson as the situation develops. Rev. Tom Hazelwood, head of UMCOR’s Domestic Disaster Response stated “In addition to an emergency grant to support the conference in its initial efforts, disaster response consultants are at the ready to provide the conference with their presence and guidance as needed.”
About 300,000 of people have been warned to evacuate and many are seeking shelter in the Qualcomm stadium in San Diego. Please pray for the people of Southern California and help them in their time of need by giving generously to UMCOR Advance #901670, Domestic Disaster Response.
UMCOR is helping the North Indiana Annual Conference in their recovery from a devastating tornado in Nappanee, Ind. over the weekend. UMCOR is in contact with Bishop Michael J. Coyner and others to meet their needs at this time.
A single tornado touched down late in the evening hours on Oct. 18 crippling the city of Nappanee. The tornado, which carried winds of 165 miles per hour, ripped through the small town and left several areas completely destroyed. An estimated 250 homes and businesses are damaged or destroyed—trees and power lines are also down.
UMCOR is strengthening the role of about 5,200 women farmers in Armenia. UMCOR is supporting 10 farmer organizations in the Ararat, Armavir and Vayots Dzor Marzes that will establish women committees within their organizations to foster women into management roles.
The program will encourage the role of women in farmer organizations by helping them achieve social goals in the community and by awarding them small grants to support their activities. Training sessions in proposal writing, needs assessments, social issues and reporting will be conducted. The program will help increase the representation of women and provide direct economic benefits to over 700 agricultural producers.
Sixty percent of Armenia’s population is engaged in agriculture with more than half being women. However, women are not proportionally represented in leadership positions within farmer organizations—many of which UMCOR helps establish. Help empower women in Armenia by giving to Armenia’s Agricultural Women’s Empowerment Program, UMCOR Advance #250225.
UMCOR’s new Gift Catalog is now available. The Catalog highlights some of UMCOR’s core programs around the world and details alternative gift suggestions. Each dollar amount on the list represents what your gifts could buy and determines the cost of each item specified for that region. 100 percent of donations will go to the designated program.
Gifts can be made in honor of someone as well as giving directly to the program. Those wishing to give a gift in honor of a loved one can receive a card from UMCOR to let that person know of the gift that was made in his or her name. After emergency response to a natural disaster, a community organizes to tackle the long-term rebuilding process. Northshore Disaster Recovery, Inc. (NDRI) is leading the multi-year recovery effort in Slidell, La. Click here and read how NDRI is rebuilding entire communities one family at a time as families are still recuperating from extensive damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.
