The UMCOR Hotline

In Today's Hotline:
Two thirds of Bangladesh is under water following torrential rains, and some 8 million people have been affected. Rains have also destroyed one complete crop season in a region where the main livelihood is agriculture. An UMCOR grant under consideration now will support partner Muslim Aid to rebuild damaged homes and distribute seeds and fertilizers to 4,300 of the most vulnerable survivors. You can assist in a meaningful way with your contributions to UMCOR Advance #982450, International Disaster Response. Designate Bangladesh Floods on the memo line of your check.
Medicine Boxes are often sent to places where medications and pharmaceuticals are not easily accessible to people. These basic medical supplies can often mean the difference between life and death.
Because of the severely low supply of Medicine Boxes, UMCOR has not been able to fulfill requests for them. This recently happened in Zimbabwe, a place where obtaining supplies is increasingly difficult due to the current economic crisis there.
The Medicine Box helps the day-to-day treatment of common ailments that plague babies and their mothers, children, and adults. The Box contains 18 essential medicines and medical supplies that are enough to respond to illnesses and injuries in a population of 1,000 people for a period of three months.

Over the past three years, UMCOR Sager Brown mission volunteers have tripled. This dramatic increase in numbers has led UMCOR Sager Brown to improve their volunteer services and offer volunteers a valuable mission experience.
Effective September 9, 2007, Sager Brown will be changing their reservation and billing systems from an individualistic approach for room and meals to a one-week mission experience with or without meals. UMCOR Sager Brown is the mission center and relief supply depot operated by United Methodist Committee on Relief in Baldwin, La. UMCOR is part of the General Board of Global Ministries.
Details of the new experience—including forms needed for team leaders—are located in the newly revised booklet, "Know Before You Go." The booklet and forms package are available online.
In the aftermath of a deadly bridge collapse in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn., which left families in the region grieving their losses, Bishop Sally Dyck of Minnesota writes: "At this point state and federal officials, rather than volunteers, must work on debris removal as they determine the cause of the collapse."
Bishop Dyck asked local United Methodists to donate blood, and supported the presence of a Minneapolis pastor working with the grieving families at a central gathering point. She also planned a full-page ad in the local newspaper to carry a pastoral letter to citizens of the region. Though Bishop Dyck did not request UMCOR funds to do these acts of mercy, UMCOR provided support with spiritual care materials. Please keep the grieving families and the community in Minneapolis, and the ones who are ministering to them in your prayers.
UMCOR provides emergency relief in many areas of the world. To find out more about UMCOR's ministries, please visit umcor.org. You can donate to any project by placing a contribution in the offering plate at a local United Methodist church; by sending a check to UMCOR, PO Box 9068, New York, NY 10087-9068; or by calling 1-800-554-8583, where credit card donations are accepted. You can also give online by clicking on any of the "Give Now" links. And, please pray for those who are hungry, displaced, sick or in poverty because of these and other natural and human-made disasters, and for the workers who minister to them.
