The UMCOR Hotline
July 31, 2007
In Today's Hotline:
Mid-July storms along the Iowa-Wisconsin border led to severe flooding in the Bagley, Wis area. The Wisconsin Annual Conference is responding to this disaster that damaged approximately 400 homes in the community. UMCOR is providing needed support for the conference's recovery ministry through an emergency grant and will provide any other needed resources.
Natural disasters such as this have tapped out UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response budget which is used to provide grants like the one to the Wisconsin Conference. UMCOR has responded to 28 domestic emergencies in 24 annual conferences since September 2006. The many emergencies over the past months have depleted UMCOR's funds for domestic disasters. Please give to UMCOR Advance # 901670, Domestic Disaster Response, to support UMCOR's work.
UMCOR Haiti is helping 2,000 families improve their nutrition and livelihoods through the Dondon Agriculture Project. The project provides each of these families with seeds, tools and agricultural training to improve their yield. This spring corn, beans and pumpkins were among the produce that was planted. Now the fields are green with promise. They will give these impoverished families nutritious food and some produce to bring to market.
United Methodists from all areas of the US will gather this fall to learn more about how churches can improve the health of their clergy, congregation and community. This third annual Congregational Health Ministries conference titled, "Empowering Ministries of Health: Starting, Implementing and Advancing," will meet in Wichita, Kan., September 23-26, 2007.
The conference content is geared toward those with a passion for health ministry, a health champion and health educators-people such as parish nurses and other interested individuals. Three program tracks will help those involved in congregational health ministry no matter what stage that ministry is in its development. One track will help churches start a health ministry, another will assist them in implementing it, and a third will focus on advancing an already existing ministry. A fourth track focuses on self care.
