The UMCOR Hotline
June 5, 2007
In Today's Hotline:
The tsunami that washed over western sections of the Solomon Islands in April 2007 was small by some standards, but for the more than 11,300 people displaced from 13 remote communities, it was devastating. Survivors are receiving relief supplies, temporary shelters, tools and trauma counseling thanks to an UMCOR grant to Action by Churches Together, the international relief consortium. Please help with your gifts to UMCOR Advance #982450, International Disaster Response.
United Methodist Church workers in Liberia are helping Gompa residents recover from severe floods and providing shelter for homeless residents in Zuani Town. UMCOR grants are augmenting the church's response. Your gifts and prayers make a difference! Please pray for these areas of Liberia and consider a gift to UMCOR Advance #150300, Liberia Emergency.
On many fronts UMCOR is reaching out to annual conference partners to help them prepare for or respond to disasters. UMCOR workers conducted disaster preparedness workshops in South Dakota and Alaska. UMCOR continued its assistance in Kansas communities that suffered floods and tornadoes in a recent spate of violent weather. You can "Be there and be hope." Your gifts to Domestic Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #901670 , help United Methodists be ready for rapid action and long-term recovery at the onset of a disaster. Please support the continuing response in Kansas through your contributions to Midwest Tornadoes, UMCOR Advance #901680.
New! Augmenting a bulletin insert posted last week are worship resources to help your church celebrate World Refugee Day. Choose a Sunday close to June 20 to recognize the 79 United Methodist congregations involved in refugee ministries and the 1,956 individuals settled by UMCOR. Both pieces are co-branded with UMCOR and our interfaith partner Church World Service. You can participate in this ministry of hospitality and compassion through your gifts to New Hope for Newcomers, UMCOR Advance #901779.
UMCOR provides emergency relief in many areas of the world. To find out more about UMCOR's ministries, please visit umcor.org. You can donate to any project by placing a contribution in the offering plate at a local United Methodist church; by sending a check to UMCOR, PO Box 9068, New York, NY 10087-9068; or by calling 1-800-554-8583, where credit card donations are accepted. You can also give online by clicking on any of the "Give Now" links. And, please pray for those who are hungry, displaced, sick or in poverty because of these and other natural and human-made disasters, and for the workers who minister to them.
