The UMCOR Hotline
May 15, 2007
In Today's Hotline:
Extreme weather caused major flooding in South Dakota, particularly affecting the Aberdeen community. UMCOR is in contact with Bishop Kiesey's office in the Dakotas Annual Conference. The floodwaters will have to recede before the extent of the flood damage can be determined. One thousand flood buckets have already been delivered and UMCOR anticipates sending emergency funds to the region.
UMCOR Armenia is helping institutionalized children to have sufficient food through a food security program that serves four institutions. The program provides each of these institutions with items such as cows and beehives and trains staff and school children how to manage them. Staff members learn about nutrition and how to process the milk and honey into other products. The children involved in this process learn important skills that can help them in their future.
UMCOR's Justice for Our Neighbors Program helps people caught in the confusing maze of US immigration law to find their way. One JFON attorney recently helped a family be reunited. First, the father was granted asylum in the US, then his family was brought over to join him.
When they were going to see the attorney to file some additional paperwork their six year old daughter asked, "Daddy, where are we going?"
He told her, "We're going to go visit the lady who helped me bring you here."
She replied, "Daddy, please tell her: Thank you very much!"
A new compact brochure, UMCOR at a Glance tells the UMCOR story with short paragraphs on history, strategy, mission, and humanitarian service around the globe. You can easily download this brochure and print it for your own use.
Use it in worship, church school, or mission fairs. UMCOR receives no World Service funds. Contributions to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering makes it possible for us to keep our promise to direct 100 percent of your designated gifts to the program you specify.
UMCOR provides emergency relief in many areas of the world. To find out more about UMCOR's ministries, please visit umcor.org. You can donate to any project by placing a contribution in the offering plate at a local United Methodist church; by sending a check to UMCOR, PO Box 9068, New York, NY 10087-9068; or by calling 1-800-554-8583, where credit card donations are accepted. You can also give online by clicking on any of the "Give Now" links. UMCOR is exempt from tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of the United States and qualifies for the maximum charitable contribution deduction by donors.
And, please pray for those who are hungry, displaced, sick or in poverty because of these and other natural and human-made disasters, and for the workers who minister to them.
BE SURE TO RECEIVE OUR HOTLINE EMAILS. MAKE UMCOR YOUR BUDDY! Some Internet Service Providers like AOL, Yahoo!, Hotmail, and Juno use email filtering software that allows you to add email addresses to a "buddy," "trusted," "safe," or approved list. Please add firstname.lastname@example.org to your list so that our messages don't end up in "junk mail" or the "trash."
