In Northern Israel a town of a little more than 4,000 people has seen much suffering in recent years. The cycles of violence in this region are beginning to affect the next generation. Schools are witnessing a dramatic increase in violence as students react to the frustrations and instability in their environment. UMCOR is assisting the Jerusalem International YMCA to address this problem. The YMCA provides one of the only outlets for youth in this Arab town of E’ilaboun and they are using their influence to bring change through a Violence Prevention Plan for Schools program.

UMCOR is giving needed support for this program that provides training for teachers and student leaders to build conflict resolution skills for seventh and eighth graders. This promising program will give students and teachers the skills they need to diffuse volatile situations and help all to move forward to a more peaceful future. Please give to support these and other efforts that bring peace in the Middle East by giving to UMCOR Advance #601740, Middle East Emergency.Online Giving

UMCOR is working with the United Methodist Church in Gorpa, Liberia, to respond to a recent tragedy in which this Nimba County town was looted and burned by a neighboring community. A total of 760 people were left homeless as a result of this action. UMCOR is working with the church there to provide both emergency relief and conflict resolution resources so that the two towns can live in peace.

UMCOR helped 300 families to have a warmer winter in Wardak and Paktya Provinces of Afghanistan. The 2006-2007 winter was notably longer and colder than previous years. UMCOR's winterization program targets communities of refugees who recently returned to Afghanistan from abroad—none of whom have electricity or running water in their shelters. The winterization packages that consisted of a metal stove for heat, warm blankets, and vouchers for firewood are a major addition to returnees' households, allowing them to survive the winter without vacating their new homes for warmer climes. All of UMCOR's beneficiaries are carefully selected as the most vulnerable, which means they are receiving little or no other assistance, and include widows, the elderly and people with disabilities.
