Julie fled her hometown with her father and siblings to escape the ongoing violence in the area. In their flight they had to sell most of their possessions just to survive. When they arrived in Kilwa, it was a struggle for her father to provide for her family and paying school fees was nearly impossible. Without UMCOR's assistance Julie would not be able to go to school. She is one of 2,012 girls in five villages and towns in the southern highlands of Congo who qualify for assistance in a girl's education program.

UMCOR also has a mentor program through which the girls are encouraged in their studies and plans for the future. The success of the program is evident in the numbers; 92 percent of the girls successfully passed their examinations to the next class.

You can help send girls to school and secure their future by giving to Democratic Republic of Congo Emergency, UMCOR Advance #198400. Online Giving

Tsunami survivors in Aceh are helping members of their own communities thanks to training, support and encouragement from UMCOR. UMCOR’s office in Indonesia has been working in the Bireuen District of Aceh to provide families with the materials and skills needed to restart their businesses or to launch new businesses. Those who receive material assistance are required to repay 25% of the value of the materials received in livelihoods packages to vulnerable members of their community, through services or goods. This repayment—which multiplies the gift of UMCOR’s financial contributions—is now underway in the project villages. In December some recipients provided 60 kilos of rice to 13 vulnerable families in Kuala Raja village. In February others who received assistance provided 72 schoolchildren with school notebooks, pens, and school shirts.

Through these new projects UMCOR will continue to enable tsunami-affected families in Aceh to rebuild their livelihoods as well as support communities to find the ways and means to help themselves.

The United Methodist Community-Based Malaria Control Program seeks to create a culture of malaria prevention throughout Africa by educating people most at risk about basic measures they can take to prevent malaria. Armed with the right information people can fight malaria by using treated bed nets, ridding the areas around their homes of stagnant water and reducing the mosquito population. Learn more about how this program is making a difference in the lives of many through UMCOR’s newest bulletin insert on Malaria. You can give to this important work through UMCOR Advance #982009, Malaria Control. Online Giving
