FLORIDA: TORNADO RECOVERY

UMCOR is helping Central Florida residents recover from the violent storms and tornadoes that swept the region early last Friday morning. UMCOR is working with the Florida Annual Conference to provide relief and recovery assistance in the counties affected. A $10,000 emergency grant from UMCOR will help in these initial actions and, says Tom Hazelwood, coordinator of domestic disaster relief for UMCOR, "we stand ready to send other people if they need it."

LIBERIA: BUILDING HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS

Nearly 250 more people have reconstructed their homes in Lofa County, Liberia through a partnership with UMCOR and the United Methodist Church in Liberia. This program is working in two villages that had been devastated by the war. People displaced by the violence are gaining access to housing as well as water and sanitation facilities. This first group of people to come home are among the most vulnerable survivors, however there are thousands more in need of reconstruction assistance. MEXICO: FLOOD RELIEF

Torrential rains caused extreme flooding throughout the Rio Grande Valley last September. People in Texas and Mexico were left with ruined homes and belongings and have begun the slow path of recovery. UMCOR provided assistance on both sides of the border. Providing assistance to the Rio Grand Annual Conference in the US and in Mexico UMCOR worked with Manos Juntas Mexico. Through UMCOR's grant, the organization could provide medicines, water jugs and staple foods, mattresses, gas burners, baby supplies and other items for survivors. In addition UMCOR Sager Brown sent over 11,000 health kits and nearly 250 bedding kits. More than 10,000 people in Rio Bravo, Mexico received needed assistance through these efforts.

COTE D'IVOIRE: FIGHTING HUNGER

UMCOR is working with the United Methodist Church of Cote d'Ivoire to fight hunger in the region. The UMC in Cote d'Ivoire provides emergency supplies like food, clothing, medicine and shelter materials to communities in the northern part of the country that is most affected by the current war.
