Rice rapidly delivered to UMCOR emergency distribution points is reaching earthquake-affected communities on the island of Sumatra. Rice is the most important food in Indonesia, and rising prices have made the staple a significant expense for the poorest and most vulnerable earthquake survivors. UMCOR's Indonesia office is partnering with the Methodist Church of Indonesia on the rice initiative, as well as exploring other opportunities for mutual action. About 2,000 people are benefiting so far. Gifts to International Disaster Response (Advance #982450) assist this urgent response. Online Giving

Severe winds swept through the Blackfeet community in northwestern Montana, damaging 44 homes. With an UMCOR grant the Yellowstone Annual Conference is providing temporary shelter for at least two families displaced in the storm and repairs for other families. Pre-Christmas snowfalls and ice storms in Nebraska crippled power lines. More than 30 towns are still using emergency generators. An UMCOR emergency grant is assisting with the Nebraska conference response. Please pray for our sisters and brothers in Montana and Nebraska, and consider a gift to UMCOR Advance #901670, Domestic Disaster Response.Online Giving

Essential hospital staff at Ganta Hospital in Liberia will be housed in new residence halls, thanks to a recent UMCOR grant. The hospital serves a region of 500,000 people in Liberia and neighboring Guinea and Côte d'Ivoire. The hospital reopened several years ago after near-total destruction of its facilities in a 14-year civil war. The grant will also provide for a new minibus to transport workers and patients. Support for Ganta's medical ministry comes from UMCOR Advance #150385, Ganta Hospital Emergency.Online Giving

The Souper Bowl of Caring is a simple but significant youth- and young-adult-led effort to fight hunger and poverty. The Souper Bowl of Caring encourages people to give one dollar and/or a canned food item as they leave worship on February 4, Super Bowl Sunday. All collections are sent by the youth to the kitchen, food bank, or other hunger organization of their choice. In addition, the youths are encouraged to participate in a "Service Blitz," in which they volunteer at a local food bank or charity in their neighborhood.

Over 2,800 United Methodist Churches are registered to participate in this year's event. Last year United Methodists raised nearly $746,000 to help our hungry and hurting neighbors both locally and around the world. This year, United Methodists want to double their giving with a goal of $1.4 million. United Methodist Churches are encouraged to give a portion of the collected offerings to a local charity and UMCOR's World Hunger/Poverty Advance #982920. Online Giving
