The UMCOR Hotline
December 19, 2006
In Today's Hotline:
Earlier this fall, UMCOR took part in a conference and donation ceremony for internally displaced children with diabetes in the nation of Georgia. UMCOR provided donations of health kits, school kits, and sewing kits to these children left vulnerable by both illness and displacement. Georgia's First Lady, Ms Sandra Roelofs, participated in the ceremony and helped distribute the kits.
Immigrants and asylum seekers already in the US may not be aware of their rights. They may need documents to assure their continuing residency or assistance with the maze of rules and policies governing their new life. In another take on hospitality UMCOR provides free legal clinics staffed with licensed attorneys through the Justice for Our Neighbors program.
Learn more about this program and share the information with others through this new church bulletin insert, JFON: A Ministry of Hospitality.
For two weeks, the people of Bethany United Methodist Church in Brooklyn, NY, have done their Christmas shopping at church. Instead of buying traditional presents that may go unused or collect dust on a shelf, folks at Bethany are buying food for hungry children and shelter for people displaced by disasters in honor of loved ones. Each gift is represented by a gift certificate that explains the project and its significance. The certificate can be wrapped or placed in a card and given to a loved one.
You can make a difference, too! Visit UMCOR's Christmas Wish List to find out how.
The 2007 UMCOR Calendar makes a great gift. This year's calendar, Questions of Crisis: Answers of Hope, features three photos each month as well as a compelling story about how UMCOR programs answer people in crisis with words of hope. Buy your calendar today at www.umcorcalendar.org, or by calling 800-682-1789. Calendars are $8.50 plus shipping and handling.
Please note that the UMCOR Hotline schedule will be interrupted during the Christmas and New Year holidays. There will be no UMCOR Hotline on December 26. The UMCOR Hotline will return on Wednesday January 3 and every Tuesday after that.
UMCOR provides emergency relief in many areas of the world. To find out more about UMCOR's ministries, please visit umcor.org. You can donate to any project by placing a contribution in the offering plate at a local United Methodist church; by sending a check to UMCOR, PO Box 9068, New York, NY 10087-9068; or by calling 1-800-554-8583, where credit card donations are accepted. You can also give online by clicking on any of the "Give Now" links. UMCOR is exempt from tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of the United States and qualifies for the maximum charitable contribution deduction by donors.
And, please pray for those who are hungry, displaced, sick or in poverty because of these and other natural and human-made disasters, and for the workers who minister to them.
BE SURE TO RECEIVE OUR HOTLINE EMAILS. MAKE UMCOR YOUR BUDDY! Some Internet Service Providers like AOL, Yahoo!, Hotmail, and Juno use email filtering software that allows you to add email addresses to a "buddy," "trusted," "safe," or approved list. Please add firstname.lastname@example.org to your list so that our messages don't end up in "junk mail" or the "trash."
