The UMCOR Hotline
December 12, 2006
In Today's Hotline:
At one year old, Rafi has only known life in a temporary living center in Banda Aceh. He was born in this center where his parents have lived since the tsunami washed away their village. While living in the center, UMCOR helped provide this young family with needed support: nutrition and regular medical checkups for young Rafi. Recently he fell very ill and UMCOR doctors were able to give him the medical care he needed and give his parents instructions for how best to care for him. Today, Rafi is happy and healthy and moving into his first home—one built by UMCOR.
UMCOR is working with partners in the Philippines to provide immediate assistance following Typhoon Durian which struck the Central Philippines on December 1, triggering mudslides and killing 1,000 people. Approximately 250,000 houses were destroyed and 83,000 people are living in evacuation centers.
UMCOR is working with the United Methodist Church in the Philippines and Action by Churches Together partners that are providing immediate relief. Please continue to pray for the survivors as they take their first fragile steps toward recovery. And give to Philippines Emergency, UMCOR Advance #240235.
Toxic waste dumped off the shore of Cote D'Ivoire last August has polluted neighborhoods located near the water, causing health and environmental hazards. Tens of thousands have sought medical treatment as a result. UMCOR is supporting the United Methodist Church of Cote D'Ivoire in their ministry to people affected by the toxic waste. The program is assisting 500 people who have lost jobs and are struggling with health issues as a direct result of the pollution. Please give to UMCOR Advance #982450, International Disaster Response, which allows UMCOR to respond to disasters such as these.
