The UMCOR Hotline
November 07, 2006
In Today's Hotline:
Sudan: School Lunches for Children
Indonesia: Homes for the Homeless
US and Mexico: Flood Recovery
Events: World AIDS Day
SUDAN: SCHOOL LUNCHES FOR CHILDREN
UMCOR is working with the United Methodist Church in Yei, South Sudan, to provide lunches for school children. Families returning to the South after years of war are working to reestablish their lives from the ground up. The school nutrition program ensures that children who often walk long distances to go to school will receive a nutritious meal when they arrive. For many, this will be their only meal that day. You can help support this work and the fight to end hunger throughout the African continent by giving to All Africa Drought/Famine, UMCOR Advance #101250. ![]()
INDONESIA: HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS
The Kuala Barracks in Aceh Province, Indonesia, that served as temporary housing for tsunami survivors, are being dismantled, thanks in large part to UMCOR. UMCOR worked with the local government to secure land and build homes for 65 families who became homeless when houses they were renting were swept away by the tsunami. Approximately 108 families lived in the crowded and dilapidated Kuala Barracks for nearly two years. For its former residents and the surrounding community, the dismantling of these barracks represents a giant step forward in recovery.

A series of summer storms caused significant flooding in the El Paso region of Texas as well as Juarez, Mexico. UMCOR is working with the Rio Grande Annual Conference to help the 4,000 people who suffered significant losses in the area make long term recoveries. In Juarez, the Rio Grande Conference and UMCOR are partnering with the Conferencia del Noroeste in Mexico to provide training and direct assistance.
