The UMCOR Hotline
October 31, 2006
In Today's Hotline:
Nias, a small island off the coast of Indonesia, was nearly leveled by the tsunami in Dec. 2004 and a second major earthquake in March 2005. UMCOR is bringing health and restoration to Nias by helping to reconstruct a health clinic in the Gomo district in the southern part of the island.
The clinic was founded by a Methodist doctor from Nias. It has always served people who are geographically isolated and face extreme poverty. Since the clinic was destroyed, the doctor has continued to see patients in the open, but has been severely hampered by the loss of the clinic itself. The reconstruction of the clinic through UMCOR's assistance will provide immense relief to the people in southern Nias.
Through a new water and sanitation program in South Darfur, Sudan, nearly 250,000 people will have better access to water and sanitation. UMCOR Sudan will work with communities to reestablish and expand existing water systems. New latrines will improve the sanitation in these areas that have an ever-increasing population of people seeking safety in the camps. To ensure this work will continue UMCOR Sudan is training community caretakers and committees to maintain the improved water and sanitation systems so they will be in place for years to come.
Clean water and sanitation facilities are the building blocks of public health. El Porvenir is an organization in Nicaragua that works to meet these basic needs by enabling poor communities to improve their health and preserve their watersheds through sustainable self-help development.
El Porvenir ensures community ownership for their new wells and latrines for these programs by requiring that 100% of the labor be provided by community members. UMCOR supports the important work of this organization through advance giving. You can help provide a healthier living environment for children and families in rural Nicaragua by giving to UMCOR Advance #525000, Clean Water and Sanitation, Nicaragua.
