The UMCOR Hotline

In Today's Hotline:
War underscores the vulnerability of children. But the children of the Middle East conflicts-regardless of their families' politics or country of origin—envision a future of hope. With a small grant UMCOR is supporting a ministry to children now living in displaced persons centers in Lebanon. Implemented by Action by Churches Together member Middle East Council of Churches, the program helps children process their fears through drawing and painting. In another mission in the region, UMCOR has provided a small grant to International Orthodox Christian Charities, whose workers are delivering emergency antibiotics, surgical supplies and food to families caught in the crossfire. But so much more could be done! Please consider a generous gift to UMCOR Advance #601740, Middle East Emergency.
More than 8,100 Afghani children are returned to school this year in newly-rehabilitated buildings. UMCOR workers put the finishing touches on the schools in August. Displaced families had been using the war-damaged buildings as temporary shelter. Families built fires and kept their livestock inside the classrooms because they lacked other options. When the families left for more permanent housing, the classrooms were in poor condition. The rehabilitation project greatly improved the learning environment for these students. "Finally we are studying in very peaceful and calm conditions," says Zarifah of her school's renovations.
The schools, in the Gardez region of Paktya Province not only provide a safe and solid place for learning but also stabilize the community. Some of the students will receive UMCOR school kits now enroute from the US to Afghanistan. You can support ministries like this in Afghanistan through your gift to UMCOR Advance #602225, Afghanistan Emergency.
UMCOR is known for its hospitality center at El Ferdous, a camp in South Darfur. UMCOR workers built a reception center for families entering the camp so they have a safe place as they try to find a new home, find building materials, and learn the facilities around the camp. In the past six months 157 families have been welcomed at the reception center. In addition UMCOR workers rehabilitated a youth center in Al Daein and opened a women's training center at Khor Omer camp. Security issues in South Darfur continue to plague camp residents, because of unrest and violence among various military factions. UMCOR has been able to continue working, though at a hampered pace. Through quiet diplomacy the UMCOR staff members have maintained a remarkable record of service to the most vulnerable. You can contribute to this mission in a meaningful way with your gift to UMCOR Advance #184385, Sudan Emergency.
