The UMCOR Hotline
June 27, 2006
In Today's Hotline:
In Machakos, a region east of Nairobi, Kenya, people wait with anticipation for their crops to be ready for harvest in July. When the rains failed last year, UMCOR assisted ACT partners in the region to supply the 500 most vulnerable families with food to help them make it through to the next harvest. Now these same partners are looking at ways to ensure a nearby water supply to help people irrigate their crops if the rains fail again.
Survivors of last October's earthquake in Pakistan and Kashmir are learning how to move forward with their lives thanks to UMCOR partner, Church World Service. CWS is providing much more than material assistance for survivors, it is also providing the psychosocial support they need to move forward. Gull is one woman who received help through this program. She lost her husband and one of her three sons in the quake and was traumatized by the experience. Through the help of a CWS counselor she is recovering from the trauma and beginning to look to the future.
UMCOR is helping five villages in the Bireuen District recover from the tsunami by rebuilding and repairing homes and by helping people get back to work. Many lost all the equipment for their small businesses. UMCOR is helping replace what was lost and is providing small business training to help people grow their businesses.
