The UMCOR Hotline
April 04, 2006
In Today's Hotline:
Violent storms and tornados rolled across five Midwestern states Sunday, killing 28 people and injuring dozens of others. The Rev. Tom Hazelwood, UMCOR's US disaster coordinator, is in contact with all of the affected annual conferences. "We are responding to each area as their needs become known," says Rev. Hazelwood. Western Tennessee was hit the hardest. UMCOR is supplying the Memphis and Arkansas Annual Conferences with emergency grants to assist them in their initial recovery efforts and anticipates doing the same for additional conferences.
Assessments throughout the storm-damaged areas will continue into this week as communities become accessible to conference personnel and early response teams. Your gifts to UMCOR Advance #901670, Domestic Disaster Response, will help in recovery. You can designate your gift to a particular storm area by marking it on the memo line of your check.
Three earthquakes shook western Iran March 30 and 31, killing 70 people with 1,200 more injured and more than 200 villages damaged. The first quake on Thursday night may have been a lifesaver for thousands as many people chose to sleep outside their homes fearing further tremors. Many were already safely outside when the strongest of the three quakes struck early Friday morning, injuring and killing those who slept inside their homes.
UMCOR is working with a partner organization, International Blue Crescent. UMCOR has partnered with IBC in past responses to earthquakes in Iran as well as in other disasters. IBC's immediate response includes distributing food staples and blankets to 1,000 families.
Give to UMCOR Advance #982450, International Disaster Response, Iran Earthquake, to support this effort.
