World Health Day: Working Together for Health
The senate debate on immigration reform is reaching a critical stage. The Judiciary Committee is expected to finalize its version for the floor on Monday, March 27, 2006.
It is important that United Methodists continue to press the committee members to agree on a bill that effectively addresses national security and unauthorized migration while promoting family unity by providing earned legalization and a path to citizenship. Inaction during the upcoming week may result in legislation exemplified by H.R. 4437, passed by the House in December, which will criminalize countless immigrants and open up criminal prosecution of churches and church members for providing assistance to immigrants.
You can take action by calling the Senate Judiciary Committee members
All denominations and faith groups are urged to organize prayer vigils on Monday, March 27, to show support for true and comprehensive immigration reform. On the same day, a large group of religious and community leaders are expected to rally on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol to call for comprehensive reform.
Ganta United Methodist Hospital in Liberia was featured in NPR’s Morning Edition on March 21. The hospital and school were held up as examples of the resiliency and commitment of the Liberian people in interview. UMCOR supports the Ganta Hospital through the Hospital Revitalization program.
You can listen to the NPR story here. Your gifts to UMCOR Advance #982168, Hospital Revitalization, Ganta, will contribute to the work and ministry of this United Methodist institution.
UMCOR: ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING
One Great Hour of Sharing Sunday is March 26.
The proceeds from this special Sunday offering benefit UMCOR directly. One Great Hour of Sharing donations guarantee that UMCOR "directs every dime of every donation into recovery and relief efforts," explained the Rev. Paul Dirdak, UMCOR director. That's because the offering pays for administrative costs.
Designated gifts provide things like sheetrock, boats and seeds. Undesignated gifts to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering provide UMCOR with the funds it takes to administer these and hundreds of other programs throughout the world.
Thank you for giving.
