A mudslide triggered by days of drenching rains buried an entire village and an elementary school in the Philippines, Feb. 17. The village of Guinsaugon is on southern Leyte Island, about 420 miles southeast of Manila. Rescue officials estimate that more than 1,000 people may be buried in the mudslide.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of the village of Guinsaugon on the Leyte Island in this time of tragedy and grief,” said the Rev. R. Randy Day, General Secretary of the General Board of Global Ministries.

UMCOR anticipates working with partners in the area including the three Episcopal Areas of the United Methodist Church in the Philippines to provide immediate relief and support for long term recovery. Give to UMCOR Advance #240235, Philippines Emergency to support these efforts. You can also give online.

The youth at Trinity United Methodist Church, Memphis, TN, wanted to do something to help others. They organized a fiesta and offered tango lessons to raise money to support recovery efforts in Central America following Hurricane Stan this past fall. Hurricane Stan spawned landslides that wiped out entire villages last October. UMCOR is supporting immediate relief and long term recovery throughout the affected region.

The Tango Fiesta raised $1,900 for UMCOR’s work. One hundred percent of the funds will go to support Hurricane Stan recovery efforts. Your gifts will too. Please give to UMCOR Advance #982523, Hurricanes 2005. If you would like your gift to go to a specific hurricane or region such as Hurricane Stan in Central America, please note that in the memo line of your check.

Every 30 seconds an African child dies of hunger. UMCOR is working to relieve the suffering caused by droughts and famines throughout Africa either through UMCOR field offices in countries like Sudan, or through partner organizations such as HEKS, a Swiss aid agency, in Niger. UMCOR has also provided a grant to assist with efforts to tackle rural poverty in Zimbabwe through nutrition programs, food distribution and self-supporting activities such as gardening.

Save lives through giving to UMCOR Advance #101250, All Africa Drought and Famine Relief.

One Great Hour of Sharing Sunday is March 26. OGHS makes all of the other UMCOR programs possible because it funds the cost of doing business for UMCOR. Any gifts that are over and above UMCOR’s administrative costs go to where they are most needed. Often they support under-funded programs.

It’s not too late to order your OGHS envelopes, posters, refrigerator magnets and offering boxes. Call 1-888-346-3862 to order and visit UMCOR’s OGHS website for more information and additional worship resources. You can also print and share UMCOR’s One Great Hour of Sharing bulletin insert with a litany of preparation to help you prepare for this special Sunday.
