 ThisCity.co.uk launches!
By: Matt... May 8, 2006 9:45am
We've launched a new site!

ThisCity [link] is a new "listings community" - it allows you to promote gigs in a way that most other sites don't. You can add listings, which each get a page in which you can embed images and links to promote your listing. You can edit your listings at any time and manage your comments. You can also comment on listings, add them to favourites and make use of loads of other features as the site grows.

ThisCity is currently in a beta testing phase in sheffield, but will grow to other areas.

 Bumper news update
By: Pete... April 4, 2006 7:52pm
Here's a bumper news update, seeing as the whole of March and a chuck of February went by without news. Rather than lots of little news stories here's one big one. Readers of the old listen.to/sheffieldbands will recognise the style maybe...

RAZOR STILETTO saw its last Saturday Night at the Plug last week. The night will now be on the first Friday of every month.

MILBURN have entered the charts at 22 with their debut single for Mercury, 'Send In The Boys'.

BISON have released their second album, which they launched at the Blind Institute on Saturday.

SMOKERS DIE YOUNGER have released their debut album jointly through Thee SPC and [Detail]. 'X Wants The Meat' came out on the 27th, and is available from all the city's best record emporiums.

APE DRAPE ESCAPE have released their debut single through the new LAUNDRETTE record label. 200 Angry Bikers is out now.

HIEM are poised to release a new mini-album, called 'Half', through the Crosstown Rebels label.

LITTLE MAN TATE have signed to V2, and are in the middle of national tour.

The LEE MCMAHON BAND have changed their name to THE TIVOLI, named after the kop at the Rotherham United ground!

BROMHEADS JACKET's cover of 'When You Wasn't Famous' can be found on the 7" of The Streets single, currently at number 8 in the charts.

LONG BLONDES won the Philip Hall award for new bands at the NME awards, which more than made up for Kate losing out to Madonna as sexiest female.

SLBC have thrown away their guitars and reinvented themselves as BEAT CONSTRUCTIONS. They played their first gig at the Grapes at the end of March.

ARCTIC MONKEYS release a new EP at the end of the month called 'Who The f*ck Are Arctic Monkeys?'. They've also taken over the universe, but I'm sure you already know that.

There's loads more I've missed (apologies to you all), I'll try and update more often, send your news to L2SBnews@googlemail.com AND peteL2SB@hotmail.co.uk

 Monkeys slammed for smoking cover
By: Matt... February 6, 2006 10:37am
Arctic Monkeys have been criticised for using a photograph of a man smoking for their album cover.

Dr Laurence Gruer, director of public health science at NHS Health Scotland, told the Herald newspaper that the cover of "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" "reinforces the idea that smoking is OK."

The band's product manager Johnny Bradshaw has denied the claims. "You can see from the image smoking is not doing him the world of good." He continued to assert that although the image had been used extensively as part of the album's promotion, there had been no complaints from stockists.

Dr Gruer is concerned that Scottish fans of the Arctic Monkeys will associate cigarette smoking with the band's cool image, and be encouraged to take up the habit. "With a blatant image of a guy smoking, it will be seen by many as a cool thing to do."

The record-breaking album, which yesterday retained its place at the top of the UK album charts, sold over 360,000 copies in its first week.

 Harrisons release new single
By: Matt... February 6, 2006 10:13am

You can also catch the band on 25th March, when they support Long Blondes at The Plug. If you listen to the new McDonalds advert you'll get a quick snippet of them too...

 Milburn signed to major
By: Pete... February 1, 2006 9:53pm
Milburn's label Free Construction have signed a deal with major label Mercury.

The band's first single for the label will be a new recording of 'Send In The Boys', with brand new b-sides. More news as we get it.

 New Arctics tour
By: Pete... February 1, 2006 9:50pm
Arctic Monkeys have announced yet another tour.

The rather well-selling band will be playing a string of dates in April, including a show at the huge Magna venue in Rotherham on 22nd.

Tickets go on sale at 6pm tomorrow, for details check out the band's website here [link]. I'd get meself outside Jacks if I were you...

Meanwhile, the Sugababes have covered 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' as the b-side to their next single. The feisty threesome, whose 'Push The Button' was ousted from the top spot by the Arctics' track, will release the song on the flipside of 'Red Dress', which is out on 6th March.
