Domestic Disaster Response - Advance #901670![]()
Four consecutive hurricanes struck the southeastern United States in the span of two months during 2004. Nearly ten months later as predictions for new storms grab national headlines, long-term recovery from the previous season's storms is quietly moving forward. Coastal areas are still pockmarked by blue tarpaulins - many of them distributed via UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response - covering rooftops damaged in the storms.
UMCOR responds to the needs of people affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, tornadoes and earthquakes as well as disasters of human origin, such as explosions, shootings, and bombings. Through a network of disaster response coordinators, UMCOR is able to respond with immediate relief, cleanup assistance, rebuilding, and pastoral counseling as well as emotional support for children and youth.

Whether it is a natural disaster like the South Asia tsunami or civil strife in war torn countries, UMCOR works to alleviate human suffering and to bring hope in seemingly hopeless situations.
Year after year UMCOR's greatest need is for funds that aid international emergency relief. While some disasters are popular in the media, which raises awareness and funding to assist in recovery, others go unheralded and therefore without the same resources to recover and rebuild. Media coverage or not, UMCOR responds and dispatches much-needed funding to relieve the immense human suffering that can occur in the wake of natural and human caused disasters.
