Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer

There are three ways you can volunteer to assist with UMCOR's work.Disaster response volunteers help in the recovery efforts following a disaster in the US.UMCOR Sager Brown volunteers go to Baldwin, Louisana, to help with the work of sorting and shipping relief supplies to locations in the US and around the world.Volunteers can also go overseas with UMVIM to support the work of UMCOR field offices through the UMCOR Non Governmental Organization.

Disaster Response Volunteers

Volunteers are often needed to help in recovery efforts following a disaster in the US. In the initial weeks, and in some places, months, only specially trained volunteers such as those on Early Response Teams can enter an area. This is because immediately following a disaster there are many health concerns due to structural damage and water-borne illnesses. Additionally, disaster areas lack the infrastructure needed to host volunteer teams.

When an area is considered safe and able to host volunteers, teams are welcomed through United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM).Oftentimes volunteers are needed for several years following a major event. To find out about groups from your area, contact your jurisdictional or conference UMVIM coordinator. The Jurisdictional and Annual Conference Coordinators' webpage will give you contact information for your coordinator. You can also call the volunteer hotline at 1-800-918-3100.

Sager Brown Depot Volunteers

Each year, more than 2,800 people volunteer at UMCOR Sager Brown in Baldwin, Louisana. They assist the Depot by processing tons of disaster relief supplies which are then shipped to national and international destinations. The shipments include hundreds of thousands of health kits, school kits, sewing kits, layette kits, flood buckets, mops and brooms, generators, bedding, blankets, and various other items depending on need.

Volunteers also help distribute boxes of food in the "Food for Seniors" program, rehabilitate houses, assist in public schools, sew in the USB sewing room, maintain the USB campus, and enjoy cultural events from the 'Cajun Coast' of South Louisiana.
