Advocates of the Month
The General Board of Global Ministries recognizes with gratitude creative efforts to share the gift of mission this holiday season.
Mike Ponder, Lay Leader at High Street United Methodist Church in Franklin, Virginia, uses a clever system to save money throughout the year. "A friend of mine told me that if you look at the front of a dollar bill, it has a number from 1-12," Ponder said. He selects a number, and throughout the year, he checks his dollar bills. He saves the dollars that have that number. At the end of the year, he sends that amount to a Global Ministries mission project through The Advance.
Aldersgate UMC in Alexandria, Virginia, is a vibrant congregation that sees "extravagant generosity" as one of its core values and a part of its mission. Recently, the church held its 8th Annual Alternative Giving Bazaar. Juanita Csontos serves on the committee that oversees this. "More needs to be done to help folks along with the idea that it's Jesus' birthday, and not ours," Csontos said. Proceeds from the Alternative Giving Bazaar go to support Advance projects in Cambodia, the Highland Support Project, Advance #15022A in Guatemala, and local ministry efforts.
For their creativity and faithful support, special thanks to our Advocates of the Month!
