Supporting Pastors and Churches in Malawi
Leter Mhone is a hard-working layperson in the Malawi Missionary Conference. He uses his extensive background in agriculture (from working on tea estates in southern Malawi) to support and increase the agriculture ministries of the church.
His vision is for each local pastor to have his or her own garden that will sustain the pastor's family through the year. Additional "circuit gardens," run by United Methodist Women or small clubs, and borehole gardens that can produce crops year-round from the run-off of the wells, could support circuits and nursery schools as well.
In November, Lester and Claude Nyirongo distributed seed and fertilizer to 15 pastors, seven circuit clubs, and six nursery schools to support their gardens.
Lester plans to make four visits throughout the growing season to monitor progress, offer advice, and celebrate the harvest. With this initial donation, the hope is that pastors, circuits, and nursery schools will be able to meet their own needs and sell the surplus to fund their own farms next year.
