The 2006 International Clergywomen's Consultation, meeting in Chicago on August 13-17 marked the 50th anniversary of the official opening of the clergy to women in what is today The United Methodist Church. More than 1,500 participants from around the world took part. The theme was "The Spirit of God Is upon Us: Celebrating Our Courageous Past-Claiming Our Bold Future." Full rights for women in the clergy were strongly championed by mission leaders in earlier days, and especially by what is now the Women's Division of the General Board of Global Ministries.
