Chapter 1: History and Memory
Presents the case for the importance of history and memory using the author's own personal story and upbringing in an ethnically Jewish community. An examination of the enormity of the Holocaust for Jewish identity and the centrality of Israel for Jews.
Chapter 2: Biblical Beginnings to Zionist Zeal
Examines the unbroken presence, shared history and common faith roots of three Abrahamic religions and their adherents in the Israel/Palestine region from earliest times up through the rule of the Ottoman Empire.
Chapter 3: The British Mandate
Explores the increase of European immigration and the escalating conflict and uprisings that ensued from the institution of the British Mandate up to the end of World War II and the aftermath of the Holocaust.
Chapter 4: From War to War to War: 1948-1973
Critiques the interpretation of the events from the systematic exile and expulsion of the Palestinians in the 1948 war through the Suez Crisis up to the time of the 1967 war. Examines an alternate historical record of events over against the dominant narrative of Israel that has informed current policies and events.
Chapter 5: The Aftermath
Looks at the rise of religious Zionism and Jewish fundamentalism and Islamic fundamentalism; the ascendance of Fateh and the feda-iyyin guerilla groups within the larger framework of the Palestinian Liberation Organization; and the cultural, religious-emotional and nationalistic adoption by American Jewry of the Jewish state. An analysis of how the substance, memory and presentation of the Holocaust have been a prime factor in the birth and development of the state of Israel, and how the Holocaust continues to influence the actions and identity of its citizens.
Chapter 6: Reframing the Questions: 1973 to Oslo and Camp David
Provides a survey of events in the history of Palestine/Israel for the last twenty-seven years. Presents the case that it is in the shadow of Oslo and Camp David that much of the recent experience in Palestine/Israel is living and for which it provides a tragic commentary.
