About the Authors

The Rev. Dr. Joseph A. Pérez was born in New York City of a Cuban father and Puerto Rican mother. An elder in the New York Annual Conference, he served churches near Newburgh, N.Y. After teaching sociology at Adrian College in Michigan, he became Area Executive Secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean with the World Division of the General Board of Global Ministries in 1977. In this position, he traveled extensively to Cuba and other countries in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Before retiring in 1995, he was Missionary Personnel Support Coordinator of the Division. Joe currently serves as vice-chair of the Detroit Conference Board of Global Ministries. With his wife, Joanne, he leads the Disciple Bible Study. Since 2000 they have annually co-led Church Women United in Michigan's Global Connection: A Bridge Between Cuba and Michigan.

Joanne Robinson Pérez was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia. She was an elementary classroom teacher in Weston, Massachusetts, as well as a music teacher in Adrian Public Schools in Michigan, retiring as an elemen­tary school principal. Joanne has always been active in United Methodist Women, serving in many local, district and conference offices, and serving as a study leader in conference and regional Schools of Christian Mission. Presently she is vice president of the North Central Jurisdiction Core Planning Group. She is chair of the Advance Committee of the Detroit Conference Board of Global Ministries. As group leader of Global Connection:   A Bridge between Cuba and Michigan, a causeway project of Church Women United in Michigan, she and her husband have led four travel/learning seminars to Cuba. She is a Disciple Bible Study Leader in her local church.

Joe and Joanne have two children;Sarah, who resides in San Francisco, and John, who lives in St. Louis. They have one grandson, Mario Ordoñez-Pérez.

Faye Wilson is an educator specializing in helping persons gain a deeper understanding of community and civic issues that impact their lives. She works full-time as the coordinator of communications and parent/community outreach for the Wicomico County Board of Education. In addition, she leads workshops, organizes training events, and creates curricula to assist in the teaching process.

For 21 years, she was on the staff of the General Board of Global Ministries where she helped to train mission leaders, developed mission education resources, and taught in United Methodist Women regional and conference schools of mission.

A musician, Ms. Wilson is a pianist/vocalist with her family group, the BCD Ensemble. She is the director of music at Mt. Zion UMC in Quantico, Maryland and is the director for Voices United, a 35 mem­ber choir, which has participants from the three churches of the Quantico-Hebron-Wetipquin Charge and nearby New Missionary Baptist Church. In her church, she is a member of the worship com­mittee and an assistant with youth ministries. She formerly served as president of her local unit of United Methodist Women.

She is the mother of one daughter, Ashley, a college sophomore.  They reside in Salisbury, on the lower eastern shore of Maryland.

In addition to being author of the children's mission study resources on Cuba, Ms. Wilson has written children's material on the themes of Mexico and Living as Christians in a Violent Society Also, she is the author of Involving Children in Mission Education, Great Mission Ideas for Workers with Children, and Upfront with Youth: Great Mission Ideas for Youth and their Leaders. She wrote the leader's guide to the adult study Life on the Mekong: Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.
