The Advance Turns 60!
The Advance has been celebrating its 60th Anniversary this year. Conceived by Bishop Bromley Oxnam to help with post-World War II recovery efforts and authorized at the 1948 General Conference, The Advance is the channel of giving to mission projects throughout the world.

One Dollar to Help a Scholar
Giving to World Communion Sunday has increased in each of the last three years. While that is positive, the 2007 figure averages to less than 15¢ per member. Imagine the lives that would be forever enriched if each United Methodist gave just $1. World Communion Sunday 2008 is October 5. Please make a difference and give generously!

A Scholar's Story
As a child, Natalya Shulgina was raised as an atheist in her Russian village home. Visits from missionaries gave Natalya a view of life with Christian love. She was baptized at the second Russian United Methodist Church Student Forum. She later received a scholarship funded from gifts to World Communion Sunday to pursue a seminary education. Natalya earned her degree and answered God's call to ordination.

World Communion Scholarships
Half of the gifts of World Communion Sunday are applied to World Communion Scholarships. These scholarships, which are awarded to minority students in the US and international students, were founded in 1944 as Crusades Scholarships. The 2008 General Conference approved legislation changing the name, which reflects the primary source of funding.

United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)? UMCOR now shows its 4-Star rating on its website and publications.
Leadership Development Grants
Each year, as funding allows, 250 students in the United States and abroad receive Leadership Development Grants. These are used to help pay for graduate education. Criteria for the grants include an expectation that students will actively work in communities of need following their studies. Gifts to General Board of Global Ministries—Mission Contexts and Relationships helps provide the grants.

Our Mission Presence
The mission presence of The United Methodist Church is in 125 countries and mission personnel are deployed in 63 countries. Mission presence may be a clinic, a hospital, an orphanage, microenterprises that stimulate economies, new congregations, and hundreds of other places of witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ through mission presence.

United Methodist Student Day
United Methodist Student Day, a Special Sunday of The United Methodist Church, is observed annually the last Sunday in November. This Special Sunday makes available scholarships and loans for students attending United Methodist related and other accredited colleges and universities.
