Making Gifts Through the United Methodist Development Fund (UMDF)

UMDF provides first-mortgage loans to United Methodist churches, districts, city societies, district unions, mission institutions, or conference church-extension agencies for the purchase of sites and for the purchase, construction, expansion, refinancing or major improvement of churches, parsonages, or mission buildings. UMDF accepts investments from United Methodists, sends them an interest check twice a year, then lends that money to United Methodist churches for new construction and/or renovation.

Volunteers building a church; a rainbow appears behind them.Ron is a single successful attorney in his mid 40's. He has learned that he has some potentially serious health issues and has begun to think about estate planning issues. As a teenager Ron was an active member in his local United Methodist youth group and worked on several new church construction building teams. Building and reconstructing churches has become a passion for Ron since he participated on his church's work team to Alabama to renovate a church. This experience helped Ron to understand and appreciate the connectional church more than any single experience.

Being an estate planning attorney, Ron knows that retirement plan assets can make excellent gifts to give as a bequest. He simply called his plan administrator and requested a change of beneficiary form, designated UMDF as beneficiary, and returned the form to the plan administrator. Ron now has the satisfaction of knowing that in the future, when he no longer has a need for his retirement assets the remainder values will be transferred to UMDF to construct United Methodist churches and related properties in the United States.
