Planned Gifts to Global Ministries
The General Board of Global Ministries is the global mission agency of The United Methodist Church, its annual conferences, missionary conferences, and local congregations. The United Methodist Church has a mission presence in more than 120 countries and missionaries serving in more than 60 countries. Global Ministries' four mission goals are to: make disciples of Jesus Christ; strengthen, develop and renew Christian congregations and communities; alleviate human suffering; and seek justice, freedom and peace. The United Methodist Church holds the belief that a Church in mission is a sign of God's presence in the world.
The Drs. Margaret and John Abbot attended a Mission Saturation event at their local church several years ago. Since that time they have been part of three medical development teams to Africa to help establish and construct new medical facilities. This year they are unable to make the mission trip but would like to participate in some other meaningful way. After visiting with a Program Director for Global Ministries' Current and Deferred Giving Program, it was determined that the most appropriate gift for the couple to make would be in the form of appreciated securities, currently valued at $25,000, which had been originally purchased several years ago for $5,000. A gift of the securities was made to Global Ministries and designated for medical equipment. The Abbots realized a $25,000 charitable deduction. They saved $8,750 in income taxes (in a 35% tax bracket - $25,000 X 35% = $8,750). By gifting the securities, paying capital gains tax on the $20,000 gain was avoided. Global Ministries in turn sold the securities and had the full $25,000 available to use toward much needed medical equipment.
