Advance # 982832Linking United Methodist health volunteers to global needs, resources, education and training
Background / HistoryVolunteers within each global location have their unique needs and successes. Surgical teams have restored vision and corrected physical deformities. Medical teams have provided medications for chronic diseases, provided emergency care and paid for ambulance transport for the seriously ill. Community based health educators have encouraged local empowerment by working alongside village health promoters to help them assess their community's needs and provide health education and intervention in their own neighborhoods. MissionTo show Christ's love in action by offering volunteers who provide health services and community health education to people worldwide who have minimal or no access to care. Goals & Objectives1. To reach out in love to poor communities of the world through the provision of health related services. 2. To empower the poor through community health education, with the aim of reducing the incidence of preventable disease. Activities Plan1. Educate and train Volunteers in Mission (VIM) team leaders and individual volunteers for health care assignments. 2. Use the health blog and listserv to connect specialized health providers with corresponding requests for help. 3. Provide regularly updated, online information to support health missioners, such as resource/supply information. 4. Sponsor workshops and online articles about prevailing health issues in target countries in order to enhance learning. Project OutcomesShort-Term: 1. To provide financial resources and health services to poor communities that addresses critical health problems. 2. To be an example of Christian love and concern to the disenfranchised people of the world. Long-Term: 1. To establish partnerships with the people of impoverished areas to improve health. 2. Create community health programs that can be sustained and grown by the local people. Project IndicatorsThe incidence of preventable diseases will be reduced in monitored communities and an increase in the number of trained health promoters working in poor communities will be evident.
