Background / History

Department of Service of Palestinian Refugees/Middle East Council of Churches (DSPR/MECC) serves the Palestinian refugees in their various geographic contexts. It has developed vocational, educational health and community development programs that touch base with the needs of the Palestinian refugee and general Palestinian population in the various localities served. Particular targets for DSPR are the women, youth and children of Palestinian refugees in the areas of service.

Mission

DSPR is an ecumenical and church related organization which is an integral part of the MECC. It was founded in 1948 and presently operates in the Palestinian Territories, Jordan, Lebanon and Galilee. DSPR attains and promotes acceptable decent living conditions for Palestinian refugees and the needy (especially women and youth) living in camps and elsewhere in the Middle East region. It is based on Christian witness through service in the education, health, environment and capacity building sectors.

Goals & Objectives

1. Contribute to improve the human rights conditions of Palestinian refugees and the needy, and contribute to their living in harmony with their communities. 2. Enable Palestinian refugee women and youth and the needy in the community to develop their potential and competencies to gain recognition on all levels of community and society in order to advance their self realization, community involvement and income generation capacities.
3. To gain world recognition and support for the right of return of Palestinian refugees to their homes and villages from which they were thrown out and their right to establish their own independent and sovereign state, in addition to generating support for the end of Israeli occupation and its practices in the occupied territories and to promote equality and justice for Palestinians living within the Green Line.

Activities Plan

Each area committee has developed a plan of action that specifies objectives pertinent to the project or activity being planned and will be implemented during the budget year.

Project Outcomes

1. Expecting mothers will have better health conditions and monitoring both pre and post natal.
2. Newborns and infants will be monitored for overall health and development progress.
3. New secretaries and vocationally trained youth, both female and male, will graduate and secure jobs. 4. New water cisterns will be constructed that will catch prized rain water for home, agricultural and other uses.
5. Better awareness among women, youth and children of issues pertaining to their roles in society and community and in preserving hygienic and environmental issues.

Project Indicators

1. Over 100,000 patient visits a year. 2. Over 250 women and men graduate from various vocational and educational programs annually. 3. 800 university students are allowed to continue to higher education. 4. 52 families have newly built water cisterns. 5. Twelve additional classrooms built. 6. Two sanitary units for girls' schools constructed. 7. Two school playgrounds constructed. 8. Hundreds of youth participated in activities.

9. Hundreds of women and youngsters participate in workshops and seminars on issues of environmental and hygienic matters in addition to issues pertaining to women's and children rights.
