Providing indigenous leaders with good theological teaching, putting special emphasis on women
Background / History
Algeria is a Muslim country and the Christians are a small minority. Especially among the Kabyle (Berber) population, many young people became Christians during the last few years and joined the congregations. Having Muslim backgrounds, they need good basic theological teaching, are keen on reading and understanding the Bible, and on learning how to live as Christians. Theological education and teaching about true discipleship are mainly needed in the congregations in Algeria.
For many years, missionaries from the States and from Europe were serving in Algeria.

Mission
To continue the existing courses and establish new courses for theological education. It is very important to educate leaders and members continually. Basic education is imparted in the country. Further studies must be pursued abroad.
A special focus is laid on the education of women.
Goals & Objectives
1. To hold regularly courses and seminars on theological questions and discipleship in the congregations.
2. To offer a study program for lay preachers.
3. To enable gifted and recommended young people who seek to enter in full-time service in the church to study theology.
Activities Plan
Put a reliable person in charge of the organization of the courses in the congregations, and ask teachers from abroad or from Algeria to hold the lectures and to work with the participants on the subject. Engage a person who is in charge of the lay preachers’ studies. A suitable program is available.
Recently, two young Algerians expressed their interest in becoming a pastor. At the moment, they are accompanied in their process of consideration and confirmation of this way.
Project Outcomes
1. The Christians in Algeria receive a deep but balanced teaching about theology, faith, and discipleship to be able to behave in a wise manner. The enacting of a new and rather restrictive law by the Algerian government is a great challenge for them and they need solid roots of faith.
2. People who are qualified to become leaders receive the necessary teaching.
3. The congregations become more and more independent of leaders and teachers from abroad and can establish a church of indigenous people in Algeria.
Project Indicators
1. The congregations of the UMC in Algeria have indigenous leadership and pass their knowledge on to the next generation.
2. The different tasks in the church can be fulfilled by qualified people.
3. Christians in Algeria find a way to witness their faith and at the same time to cope with the law on religion in their country, which forbids Christian activities outside the church building.
4. The congregations learned to focus on the things they have in common and not on the questions that are dividing them.
