Domestic Disaster Response #901670
When tornadoes, floods, wildfires or other disaster strike in the US, UMCOR is there. This is possible because of the Domestic Disaster Response Advance which provides funds for UMCOR's immediate and long-term response to disasters in the US.
The Domestic Disaster Response Advance means that funds are ready and available to provide immediately. UMCOR often provides an emergency grant of $10,000 to help Annual Conferences immediately after a disaster. Then, as specific needs are made known, UMCOR provides further funding to meet those needs. This is in addition to the training and personnel support UMCOR provides when disaster strike.
In an article about UMCOR's response to the Feb. 5, 2008 tornadoes in the southern United States, Cathy Farmer, director of communications for the Memphis Annual Conference said, "We feel like we've 'grown up' with UMCOR. When we first dealt with tornadoes like this in 1999, we weren't prepared-we had no organization. But with UMCOR, we got the help we needed: the emergency grant funds, help with setting up, training in all aspects, helping start case management." Much of this work was possible because of the Domestic Disaster Response Advance.
