Rev. Dr. David G. Beckett is a United Methodist missionary currently appointed as superintendent of the Alaska Missionary Conference. He was formerly the pastor of St. John's United Methodist Church in Anchorage, Alaska.
Dr. Beckett began his Alaska ministry in 1991 as mission pastor for the Soldotna United Methodist Church, a small, isolated congregation. He was appointed to St. John's, a growing congregation, in 1999.
Living and working in Alaska has its unique challenges. The Alaska United Methodist Conference covers an area twice the size of Texas--586,000 square miles--and has 28 churches and around 4,000 members. Some of the mission stations can only be reached by boat, plane, or dog sled. Temperatures can vary as much as 160 degrees in some areas. The extremes of daylight and darkness (depending upon the time of year) add to the sense of stress and isolation. With over 600,000 persons who call Alaska home, the church bears witness to the Creator who bears the face of Christ and seeks to make disciples in His name.
David says that he has found Alaska "to be a place where I can best express my faith in God through Christ. My wife and four children arrived here in 1991 to stay for four years, [but] Alaska, its land, and people continue to be a good fit with my soul and gifts for ministry and mission."
A native of Ohio and a member of the West Ohio Annual Conference, Dr. Beckett served as pastor in Allentown United Methodist Church (1982-1987) and Trinity United Methodist Church as associate pastor (1987-1991). He was ordained as a deacon in 1981 and as an elder in 1984.
He holds a Master of Divinity degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio (1982). He completed additional training at Graduate Theological Foundation in Indianapolis, and received Doctor of Ministry degree in 1994.
David is married to Kim Beckett, who is also in mission. They are parents of four children: Jennifer Kay, born 1982; Kayan Gary, born 1985; Lauren Kimberly, born 1987; and Jeremy David, born 1988.
